Capturing Physical Phenomena within Living Systems Using Light

Biological systems maintain stable functionality through the highly sophisticated regulation of a wide range of physical processes. While this may seem almost self-evident, the underlying reality is far more complex when examined at the microscopic level of single molecules and proteins. We investigate the physical phenomena that occur in living systems by combining advanced techniques in optical microscopy and spectroscopy. In particular, we focus on light-driven biological processes such as photosynthesis, and explore ultrafast photoreactions that take place on nanometer (10⁻⁹ m) spatialscales and femtosecond (10-15 s) timescales. To achieve this, we develop home-built, state-of-the-art instrumentations, and take on the challenge of uncovering biological phenomena and reaction mechanisms that have never been captured.
生体系では様々な物理現象を高度に制御することで安定な機能を発現しています。当たり前のように思えるかもしれませんが、ミクロの領域で１つ１つの分子やタンパク質を眺めてみるとそう単純ではありません。私達のグループでは、生体内で生じる物理現象を光学顕微技術とレーザー分光技術を駆使して解析しています。特に光合成などの光反応に関わる光受容タンパク質を対象に、ナノメートル（10^-9 m）空間領域で生じるフェムト秒（10^-15 s）時間スケールの超高速光反応を観測しています。そのためにオンリーワンの装置を独自に開発し、世界でまだ誰も見たことのない生体現象や反応機構の解明を目指しています。
Our laboratory pursues research with the following aims:
Understanding biological reactions from a physical perspective.
Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms of ultrafast reactions driven by light.
Establishing new experimental methods using original equipment we develop ourselves (covering every stage from equipment development to precise measurement, in-depth analysis, and scientific interpretation).
Pioneering new research frontiers through collaboration across diverse fields, such as quantum optics, theoretical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, organic geochemistry.

We are actively recruiting graduate students. We welcome lab visits, inquiries, and consultations either in person or online via Zoom at any time. We encourage applications from students not only from biology but also from other fields such as physics, chemistry, and engineering. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our university, SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies), also regularly holds graduate school information sessions.
